G8 Summit to Address Targets for HRH Shortage

Setting numerical goals to address the global shortage of health workers will be on the agenda at the Group of Eight Hokkaido Toyako Summit in July, according to Kyodo News. While the G-8 has not indicated any new commitments for addressing health worker shortages, the inclusion of a set of World Health Organization guidelines is under consideration.

These figures may be used to set a target for strengthening financial and other support to train and retain health workers. The WHO goals include achieving 4.1 health service providers and support workers — 2.3 would be health workers such as physicians, nurses and midwives — per 1,000 people by 2015.
