This manual provides step-by-step guidelines as a “how-to” for implementing the CAPA approach, and was developed for use by State Ministries of Health, program managers, technical staff, and donor agencies involved in community-oriented approaches for child survival activities. Basic Support for Institutionalizing Child Survival/Nigeria (BASICS II/N), in collaboration with Nigeria’s federal and state governments, conceptualized and designed a community-based approach (CBA) called Catchment Area Planning and Action (CAPA) to empower community members to take an active role in improving the health of their children in areas of immunization, nutrition, and malaria.

The guides in this toolkit are intented to be used to facilitate a broad discussion of the elements and conditions that underpin the concept of informed and voluntary decision making, help users assess the status of sexual reproductive health decision making in a given program by identifying the challenges and supporting factors at the individual/community, service-deliver, and policy levels, and to help users plan strategies to strengthen supports for clients’ reproductive health decision making.

This package includes Summary Document; Introduction to the Approach and Description of Facilitator Training; Facilitators’ Guide: Consultation I; and Facilitators’ Guide: Consultation II. The Community Problem Solving and Strategy Development (CPSSD) activities in Uganda have been designed to help health workers learn to work with communities, understand community perspectives about the services, and encourage community support and participation in the delivery of services, so that immunisation coverage is raised and sustained. Immunisation coverage and drop out rate monitoring have been introduced to help health workers track their progress and provide information to the communities they serve.

In Tanzania, the PHRplus project developed and tested a set of training materials and tools designed to strengthen the Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) system. All of the tools were implemented in twelve project districts in eight regions of the country. The tools can be adapted for use in other countries and include job aids for district training of trainers, facility training of trainers, district and facility level IDSR training materials and other supporting training tools. This module is designed to improve the awareness, knowledge and skills of health professionals on gender-based violence. Gender-based violence has long remained a feature of family and social life, about which society has preferred to remain silent. GBV takes many forms and affects a large number of women from all parts of the world at different points in their life cycle, from infancy and childhood to adulthood and old age. Health professionals are in a unique position to identify the problem, contribute to its prevention and assist victims. This is because health facilities are probably one of the few public institutions that most women interact with at some point in their lives - for pregnancy and delivery-care, for contraception, for health-care for their children or for their general health needs.

This manual presents Learning for Performance, a systematic instructional design process based on IntraHealth’s experience in designing reproductive health and HIV/AIDS training and performance improvement programs over the last 27 years in countries around the world. This handbook is intended to help bridge the gap between the theoretical constructs behind mentoring (and associated cultural change in health-care settings) and real practitioner experience. Although mentoring has taken hold in a variety of professional settings, we focus specifically upon mentoring for service-delivery change within clinical health-care settings. Our audience is likely to be a practitioner who sees the need for a new process, protocol or procedure.
