Zimbabwe Health Worker Strike Ends

After two months, health workers in Zimbabwe ended the strike that paralyzed a public medical system already overburdened by HIV/AIDS. Doctors, nurses and paramedics participated in the strike to demand better pay in the face of the country’s rapid inflation rates. Nurses and paramedics were able to return to work last month after the government made accommodations for their demands, but the doctors remained on strike. The Minister of Health, David Parirenyatwa, informed the press that the government has now agreed to a wage increase for doctors as well, which effectively ended the strike. Details of the deal were not released.
