Medical Schools in Rural Areas – Necessity or Aberration?

The purpose of this article was to analyze and compare the graduates of an urban- and a rural-located university in Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) where there is major maldistribution of physicians. While 70% of Congolese live in rural areas, relatively few doctors practice there. The results of the research for this article support the policy of establishing medical schools in rural areas, and also provide indications of approaches likely to increase the number and expertise of rural-located physicians. Narrowing the Gap between Eye Care Needs and Service Provision: a Model to Dynamically Regulate the Flow of Personnel through a Multiple Entry and Exit Training Programme

The purpose of this paper is to present a complex yet transparent, computable model to simulate the regulation of the flow of personnel through a multiple-exit eye care training scheme linked to the health workforce. The proposed training system is based on the notion that all practitioners within eye care be trained with a selection of topics from a common set of competences. In theory this would allow any practitioner to increase his or her range of competences by both acquiring new ones and by lifting the standard of those already attained.

Innovative Model Improving Success at University for Regional Australians Suffering Educational and Social Disadvantage

Implementation of Integrated Management of Childhood Illness in Tanzania: Success and Challenges

Tanzania is implementing the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI), developed by the WHO and UNICEF to improve the management of child health at the primary care level in order to reduce child mortality in low and middle income countries. Workers in health facilities are trained in a structured IMCI case management course.
