This document offers key concepts and definitions to establish a common language describing the private health sector. In addition, it integrates global demographic, economic, and policy data to provide a snapshot of the private health sector in selected developing countries. [from author]

The HRH country profiles serve as a tool for systematically presenting the HRH situation, policies and management. They are expected to help to monitor trends, generate regional HRH overviews, provide comparable data between countries and identify points for focused action in countries. They will also serve for a comparison of countries’ responses to similar HRH challenges.

Note: Current profiles include Gambia, Malawi, Mauritania, Nigeria and Uganda.

The goal of this tool is to improve the quality of and access to primary health care services, by monitoring and measuring important performance indicators of the health system at district level. It provides an overview of the delivery of primary health care services in the public health sector across the provinces and districts in South Africa by means of an annual publication including data on nurse clinical workload and clinic supervision rate. The National Physician Database (NPDB) provides information on the demographic characteristics of Canadian physicians and their level of activity within the country's medical care system. It is used by governments, professional associations, consulting firms, pharmaceutical companies, researchers and the media for medical human resource planning and utilization analysis. This presentation covers the state of the health workforce in Ethiopia and defines the crisis in health worker coverage including numerous charts and staistics that track the decline in the number of doctors.

The results of this survey shed light on several aspects of problems faced by reproductive health services regarding provider performance, equipment and supplies in facilities and laboratories, availability of medicine, initial staff qualification and in-service training, and supervision of health care providers. The results will serve as a guide for monitoring and evaluation of maternal and child health programs, reproductive health programs, HIV/AIDS programs, and other infectious diseases programs. This assessment was designed to provide detailed information on the availability and quality of facility infrastructure, resources, and management systems. Detailed information was also collected on services for child health, family planning, maternal health, antenatal care, and delivery care. The Pharmacist Database is a primary source of data on the size of the pharmacist workforce in Canada and contains information that is key to effective human resource planning in the health care sector. This background report for the World Health Report 2006 details the costs of eliminating critical HRH shortages based on data from the 2006 World Health Organization World Health Report. This was used to determine the minimum number of health workers required to supply sufficient health care to the populations of developing countries, as well as calculating the necessary costs of bridging the gap between current health worker availability and the projected requirements for 2015. Well-functioning health information systems are required to ensure the production, analysis, dissemination and use of reliable and timely essential human resources for health (HRH) information needed for workforce planning, management and evaluation. This project aims to produce a set of indicators and domains with definitions and associated fact-sheets to establish a minimum data set to record, share, analyse and apply HRH data.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has been collecting and compiling cross-nationally comparable data on health workers in all WHO Member States. The data available in the Global Atlas of the Health Workforce is the main outcome of this effort. Estimates of the stock (absolute numbers) and density (per 1000 population) of the health workforce are available here for 193 Member States. National-level data refer to the active health workforce, that is, all persons currently participating in the health labour market. [adapted from publisher]

World Health Statistics 2008 includes 2008 health statistics for WHO’s 193 Member States. This fourth edition includes 10 highlights in health statistics, as well as an expanded set of over 70 key health indicators. Gender analysis of the health workforce may reveal that health systems themselves can reflect or even exacerbate many of the social inequalities they are meant to address and be immune from.

Measuring and monitoring the whole education and training pipeline is essential to the planning, management and quality control of the health workforce in a country. This requires timely and reliable data on each of its phases. [from author]

This easy-to-use web-based tool compiles and analyzes country data from multiple sources, provides charting options, and generates automated country fact sheets, helping users to assess the performance of the country’s health systems.

This database can be used to produce tables of health indicator data according to year, country within the Americas, and indicator type. Human Resources for Health indicators are included in the “Resources, services, and coverage” section. The available data is from 1995-2007.

The 2006 Tanzania Service Provision Assessment Survey provides detailed information on the availability and quality of facility infrastructure, resources, and management systems, and on services for child health, family planning, maternal health (antenatal and delivery care), and selected infectious diseases, namely sexually transmitted infections and tuberculosis. These yearly summary reports provide information on nurse wages and the comparitive buying power of these wages in select countries in North America, Western Europe and Japan. The data are results from a survey of 10 National Nurses’ Associations. [from introduction]

This report provides an overview of the public health situation across the 46 Member States of the African Region of the World Health Organization. The report charts progress made to date in fighting disease and promoting health in the African Region. Significant numbers of African-trained health workers migrate every year to developed countries including Canada. They leave severely crippled health systems in a region where life expectancy is only 50 years of age, 16 per cent of children die before their fifth birthday and the HIV/AIDS crisis continues to burgeon. The population of Sub-Saharan Africa totals over 660 million, with a ratio of fewer than 13 physicians per 100,000. [from introduction]

The migration of doctors and nurses from Africa to developed countries has raised fears of an African medical brain drain. But empirical research on the causes and effects of the phenomenon has been hampered by a lack of systematic data on the extent of African health workers’ international movements. We use destination-country census data to estimate the number of African-born doctors and professional nurses working abroad in a developed country circa 2000, and compare this to the stocks of these workers in each country of origin.
