Remittances of Migrant Tongan and Samoan Nurses from Australia

Migration and remittances are of considerable importance in the small Pacific island states. There has been a significant migration of skilled health workers in recent decades to metropolitan fringe states, including Australia and New Zealand. This paper reports the findings of a re-analysis of a survey of Samoan and Tongan migrants in Australia where the sample is split between nurse households and others.

Decentralization's Impact on the Health Workforce: Perspectives of Managers, Workers and National Leaders

This paper examines evidence from published literature on decentralization’s impact on the demand side of the human resource equation, as well as the factors that have contributed to the impact. The elements that make such an impact analysis exceptionally complex are identified. They include the mode of decentralization that a country is implementing, the level of responsibility for the salary budget and pay determination, and the civil service status of transferred health workers. The main body of the paper is devoted to examining decentralization’s impact on human resource issues from three different perspectives: that of local health managers, health workers themselves, and national health leaders.

Assessing Human Resources for Health: What Can Be Learned From Labour Force Surveys?

Attitudes of Nursing Students of Kolkata Toward Caring for HIV/AIDS Patients

This study examines the attitudes of nursing students toward caring for HIV/AIDS patients and their knowledge and perceptions about the disease. Findings revealed a very positive outlook of the nursing students in regards to caring for HIV/AIDS patients. Although most of them expressed their willingness to take any job offer concerning caring for HIV/AIDS patients, 34.3% apprehended resistance from their family members in this regard. However, they also considered that it would be possible for them to overcome the resistance. Although 100% of the students had heard of HIV/AIDS, a number of them had misconceptions about various aspects of the disease.
